Abstract
The valves of the deep veins of the thigh and iliac veins have been studied in 27 female cadavers. 1. The incidence valves in the external iliac vein was 38.9 percent in the present series of 54 limbs. The competent valves were not observed in the common iliac vein. 2. The femoral vein contains an average of 3.5 valves. On macrosoopic examination, almost all of the valves in the femoral vein appear to be competent. 3. The commonest site of a valve in the femoral vein is just distal to the mouth of deep femoral vein (100%). The second commonest site is at, or just distal to, the inguinal ligament, where 61.1 percent were situated. 4. With a few exceptions, the valves in the main venous trunk of the lower limb are bicuspid, having an anterior and a posterior cusp.
